IVA information across the West Midlands

One legal arrangement, seven councils, seven different support systems around it. The IVA does not change at the boundary; the help does.

An IVA follows the same England and Wales framework everywhere in the West Midlands — the 2025 Protocol, usually 60 months, creditor approval by 75% by value, the family home protected. What changes by authority is the council-tax arrears process feeding into it, the crisis and housing support available while a proposal is prepared, and the free advice services that check the alternatives first. Birmingham has the region’s largest advice ecosystem and its own IVA guide; this page covers the region.

The arrangement, region-wide

Everything in the IVA guide applies: eligibility, the application stages, costs. Licensed insolvency practitioners operate across the region and nationally; distance is irrelevant to an arrangement run by post and online.

What differs by council

Birmingham administers crisis and Housing Payment support through separate routes and has the deepest free-advice network. Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall each run their own Council Tax Reduction schemes and Crisis and Resilience Fund provision with different application routes and criteria. Coventry operates separate Crisis and Housing Payment forms. Solihull is smaller and its advice route runs largely through Citizens Advice. Council tax arrears from any of them go into an IVA; the current year’s bill from any of them does not.

The regional advice route

Free, authorised advice comes first everywhere: local Citizens Advice, the national charities, and — in the Black Country and Birmingham — community advice centres that also act as DRO intermediaries. An adviser checks whether a DRO or bankruptcy fits better before any IVA is proposed. Regional adverts promising write-off percentages are lead generation, not advice, wherever in the West Midlands they appear.

The region in the numbers

England and Wales insolvency figures are published monthly by the Insolvency Service — the tracker carries the current release — and regional breakdowns are published annually; where those show the West Midlands running above the national rate, the local support systems above are the reason the region’s advice capacity matters.
