Debt help in Northern Ireland
The debt solutions that actually apply in Northern Ireland, the free advice available locally, and how the law differs from the rest of the UK.
Debt Relief Orders in Northern Ireland: the current limits
Northern Ireland runs its own DRO scheme under the Insolvency (Northern Ireland) Order 1989, and its limits were raised in 2024 to match England and Wales: total debts of less than £50,000, monthly surplus income of £75 or less, assets of no more than £2,000, and a single vehicle worth up to £4,000 disregarded. Many websites still publish the old £20,000 / £1,000 / £2,000 figures — they are out of date. Applications go through an approved intermediary; the fee position should be confirmed with the Insolvency Service (NI) at the point of application, as it has differed from England and Wales.
Bankruptcy in Northern Ireland
Bankruptcy in Northern Ireland is not the England and Wales online process. A debtor’s petition is presented to the High Court in Belfast, with a court fee and a deposit toward the Official Receiver’s costs, and the Insolvency Service (NI) administers the estate. Discharge is normally after 12 months. The current fees and forms should be taken from the Department for the Economy’s Insolvency Service pages rather than any England and Wales figure.
IVAs in Northern Ireland
Individual Voluntary Arrangements are available in Northern Ireland on substantially the same basis as England and Wales, including the 2025 IVA Protocol’s terms: usually 60 months, creditor approval by 75% by value, and the same treatment of the family home. Scottish routes — Trust Deeds and the Debt Arrangement Scheme — do not apply in Northern Ireland, whatever a UK-wide advert implies. The IVA guide and its cluster apply here with the jurisdiction noted.

Because the thresholds differ, figures quoted on UK-wide debt websites are frequently wrong for Northern Ireland. Check the current criteria with the Insolvency Service of Northern Ireland or a local adviser before relying on any published limit. Breathing Space, as it operates in England and Wales, does not apply.

How this differs from the rest of the UK
Northern Ireland has its own insolvency legislation under the Insolvency (Northern Ireland) Order 1989, administered by the Insolvency Service of Northern Ireland. IVAs, Debt Relief Orders and bankruptcy all exist, but thresholds, fees and procedures differ from England and Wales, and the DRO limits in particular are not the same.

Northern Ireland has the same solution names as England and Wales but its own legislation, its own thresholds and its own fees. Check any figure against nidirect rather than a GOV.UK page written for England and Wales. Breathing Space does not apply here.
