IVA information and debt help in Birmingham
An IVA is the same legal arrangement in Birmingham as anywhere in England — what is local is the advice, the support around the decision, and the mistakes to avoid on the way in.
The arrangement itself
Everything in the IVA guide applies unchanged: eligibility, the six-stage application, what it costs, home treatment under the 2025 Protocol. The IVA calculator shows your own arithmetic before anyone quotes you a percentage.
Getting IVA advice in Birmingham
Advice comes first and it is free: Citizens Advice Birmingham, the city’s community advice centres and the national charities will test whether an IVA is right at all — a DRO (no fee, debts up to £50,000) or bankruptcy may fit better, and an adviser is obliged to say so. Be wary of Birmingham adverts promising “up to 80% written off” — those are lead generators, not advisers, and the percentage is marketing.
Birmingham support while you decide
A proposal takes weeks; the bills do not wait. Birmingham City Council’s council tax support, Housing Payments and Crisis and Resilience Fund provision carry the household through — the Birmingham debt help page covers each and how to apply. Council tax arrears themselves go into the IVA; the current year’s bill does not.
Birmingham council-tax arrears and an IVA
Birmingham City Council’s arrears go into an IVA as an unsecured creditor and are bound like any other once approved; a liability order does not survive inclusion. The current year’s bill continues and must be budgeted for — and Birmingham’s Council Tax Reduction scheme should be checked before the bill is treated as fixed. Council tax in an IVA covers the mechanics.
Birmingham homeowners and tenants
Homeowners: the 2025 Protocol excludes the family home; qualifying equity of £10,000 or more usually extends the term to 72 months rather than forcing a remortgage — the homeowner rules in full. Tenants: rent is a priority payment protected inside the budget, and since 1 May 2026 England’s eviction rules changed; an IVA does not itself protect a tenancy, but it stops the unsecured pressure that puts rent at risk.
Self-employed people and HMRC debt
Birmingham’s large self-employed and small-trader base uses IVAs routinely: the self-employed guide covers accounts instead of payslips, seasonal payment profiles and ongoing tax. HMRC debt is normally included and votes like any creditor; tax falling due during the arrangement must be paid as it arises.
IVA vs DRO vs DMP vs bankruptcy
An adviser checks the alternatives first, and so should you: IVA vs DRO, IVA vs DMP, IVA vs bankruptcy — and bankruptcy in Birmingham covers the local support around that route too.
Questions to ask an authorised adviser
Which alternatives did you rule out, and why? What will my monthly payment be, and how was it calculated? What are the nominee and supervisor fees, and where do they come from? What happens to my home and car? What happens if my income falls — or rises? What is your firm’s FCA reference number? A good adviser welcomes every one of those.
Across the West Midlands
The same framework and the same free-advice-first route apply across the region — the West Midlands page links each authority’s own support. Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Coventry each have their own council schemes and advice services; the IVA does not change at the boundary, but the help around it does.
