Can you get a Debt Relief Order in Scotland?

No — and that is not a gap in your options. Scotland runs its own statutory system with a direct equivalent for the same situation a DRO serves, plus routes England does not have.

No. Debt Relief Orders exist in England and Wales (with a parallel scheme in Northern Ireland) and are not available to people living in Scotland. Scotland’s insolvency system is separate and administered by the Accountant in Bankruptcy, and its equivalent for the low-income, low-asset situation a DRO serves is Minimal Asset Process (MAP) bankruptcy — a simplified, quicker form of sequestration. Scotland also offers the Debt Arrangement Scheme (repay in full under statutory protection, with interest frozen — no English equivalent), Protected Trust Deeds, and full sequestration.

Why DROs stop at the border

Insolvency is devolved: the Insolvency Service and the courts of England and Wales have no jurisdiction over personal insolvency in Scotland, where the Bankruptcy (Scotland) legislation and the Accountant in Bankruptcy govern instead. Which system applies follows where you live — your habitual residence — not where your creditors are. Searching from Glasgow for a DRO usually means one thing: you have read about the England-and-Wales solution and need its Scottish counterpart. The closest Scottish counterpart for low-asset cases is the Minimal Asset Process.

The Scottish equivalent: MAP bankruptcy

MAP is built for the same person a DRO is built for: little or no spare income, minimal assets, debts that realistically cannot be repaid. It is applied for through the Accountant in Bankruptcy after advice from an approved money adviser — the adviser stage is mandatory, free through the services below, and doubles as the check on whether MAP, full sequestration, the Debt Arrangement Scheme or a Protected Trust Deed fits your case better. Like a DRO, MAP writes off the debts it covers; like every formal route, it marks your credit file for six years and carries eligibility rules an adviser confirms against your actual figures.

DRO vs the Scottish routes, in one view

A DRO freezes debts for 12 months then writes them off, for people within strict debt, income and asset limits — MAP bankruptcy is the Scottish answer to that situation. An English Debt Management Plan’s informal repayment role is played — with far stronger legal protection — by the Debt Arrangement Scheme. An IVA’s role belongs to the Protected Trust Deed. The mapping is close but never exact: terms, protections and homeowner treatment differ, which is why the free adviser conversation matters more, not less, at the border.
